A Tribute to our Heros and Heroines Serving Our Country
May 26, 2008 in Author, Blog, Laura Iding, M&B Medical, USA by Laura Iding
Today is Memorial Day, a day to remember those heros and heroines who have died while serving our country.
Military heros and heroines are very popular in books. Why? My guess is because these are regular people, our neighbors, our relatives and our friends who are doing extraordinary things. I personally love a book with a Military hero. They are absolutely some of my favorites.
My dad’s oldest brother, Uncle Bob, served in WW II and was stationed in the South Pacific. I of course wasn’t born yet, but when I grew older, I noticed Uncle Bob didn’t like the fireworks during the Fourth Of July. Those loud popping sounds reminded him too much of gunfire. After Uncle Bob passed away, I discovered he’d been awarded a medal of honor and my dad told me the story. He and several other men were bunkered down in a fox hole for three days straight. They were tired, hungry and thirsty. Their enemies crept up and launched a grenade right into the middle of their fox hole. For a few stunned seconds they all stared at it, and then Uncle Bob threw himself on top of the grenade, in an effort to save the rest of the men. The grenade happened to be a dud. Fortunately, the entire group was rescued a few hours later. They all survived.
The actions of a true hero? I think so.
So today, we honor those men and women who served our country. Those who gave their lives so we could live in peace.
Please stop by and let us all know who the special person is in your life that you’d like to remember today.
This one is for you, Uncle Bob Wanke. May you rest in peace.

Laura, that was a beautiful tribute to your uncle, a true hero. My father was in the Navy in WWII and though he did not see combat he was in the war zone in the Philippines and talked about the special friendships forged during that time. I went with my mother to place roses on his grave this weekend, on the first Memorial Day we have spent without him. He is another hero.
Donna, I so agree. True hero’s and heroines don’t tout what they’ve done. In all those years my Uncle never mentioned his actions, we only found out after he passed away.
Thanks for the wonderful comment.
