CataRomance Guest Blog: My Love for Libraries by Barbara White Daille
September 21, 2010 in Blog by Donna Zapf
Growing up, I would often see my mom sitting at the kitchen table or in her recliner in the living room with a book propped open in front of her. She made a great role model for someone who would become an avid reader and writer and, long years later, an author with her very own books in print.
Thanks to my mom, my love affair with libraries began when I was five years old. She took me to the local branch to get my first library card. All I needed was to be able to print my name. No problem at all with that. The difficulty came in giving the completed application to the librarian, because I was too short to reach across her desk!
The neighborhood branch was a fairly small place, just one room packed floor-to-ceiling with books, and with only a half-dozen shelves in the children’s section. By third grade, I’d probably read every one of those titles twenty times over. Even though I expanded my borrowing to the school library, I soon ran out of reading material. It wasn’t long before I’d moved on to Young Adult novels and devoured those, too.
My love for books led me to volunteer both at my elementary and high schools. What job could be better than that? Well, to my surprise, not long after graduating from college and getting married, I found out there could be something better: spending my days around books and getting paid for it. J
For several years, I worked as a clerk in the town library. Of all the jobs I’ve held over the years, there’s no doubt that was one of the best—except for being a writer, of course.
I’m sure you have a story of how you became interested in reading, too. I would love to hear it, so please share!

From the time she was a toddler, Barbara White Daille found herself fascinated by those things her mom called “books.” Once she learned the words between the covers held the magic of storytelling, she wanted to see her words in print so she could weave that spell for others.
Barbara hopes you will enjoy reading her stories and will find your own storytelling magic in them!
Barbara’s upcoming release from Harlequin American Romance, FAMILY MATTERS, will hit bookstore shelves on October 8th.

About the
Book:

I can barely remember a time when I didn’t have a book in my hand. Reading has always been a constant and I especially enjoyed reading to my daughter and the children I taught. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Donna, you’re very welcome.
I think reading aloud to children is such a great way to get them to love books.
And I’m like you–can barely remember a time I wasn’t holding a book in my hands.

I remember we had the Reading Is Fundamental program when I was in elementary school. That and my older sister would walk me to the library. With four kids we didn’t have a lot of money to buy books, so the library was a great resource for fresh reading material. And a book under the Christmas tree was a treat–hours of pure escape!
My mother used to read fairy tales to us at night, and I remember being enthralled. By the time I was four, I was reading. We had a bookmobile stop near our house, and I can remember how happy I was choosing books. Sometimes my mother would drive us to the big library. All great memories.
We were the family that had to have restrictions on the number of books we took out of the library as we were all such voracious readers. Nancy Drew was my heroine all through elementary school!

Loved your story, Barbara. I can’t tell you how many times I got in trouble for not answering my mom. I was in the backyard, propped against a tree devouring a library book. Always late for dinner
Amy – a book for Christmas was one of the best gifts I could get! Even today, for any holiday or special occasion, my husband can’t go wrong with giving me a book or a gift certificate to a bookstore.

Edie – I’m so envious of your bookmobile memories!
I’d never heard of one until I was an adult, and I’ve always wished we had one, too. Imagine a vehicle full of books stopping right in my neighborhood!

Dale – I was recently at a school library and saw the librarian had an entire row of Nancy Drew books on a cart to be shelved. I told her I wanted to borrow every single one of them! LOL
Nancy was one of my favorite reads.

Carol – that doesn’s surprise me. LOL With your focus, I can just envision you engrossed in a book and not even hearing your mother!
