Review: Tempted by His Target by Jill Sorenson
September 12, 2011 in Harlequin Romantic Suspense, October 2011, Reviews by Amelia
The setting of TEMPTED BY HIS TARGET is colorfully described and lets the reader experience numerous locales in Mexico while watching the characters live through one risky peril after another. Jill Sorenson has created riveting dilemmas for her hero and heroine to face, where they much confront physical dangers along with a myriad of emotional issues.
When Brandon Knox meets Isabel Sanborn on a beach in Oaxaca, Mexico, he uses surfing as an excuse to talk with her. The actual reason he wants to get closer is because she is a fugitive accused of killing the son of a ruthless man who deals in illegal drugs, and he is the U.S. marshal assigned to bring her back to the states. Isabel once lived richly in California, but she has been hiding out for two years hoping to avoid the notice of anyone. Even though Brandon seems like a regular guy who enjoys surfing, she remains wary of him as she has learned to not trust anyone.
An incident involving men sent by the father of the man she is supposed to have murdered leads to Brandon and Isabel fleeing the area to keep from being killed themselves. Not knowing what authorities they can trust in the area, they can only rely on each other to hopefully escape. Brandon knows getting personally involved with his fugitive can bring nothing but future problems for him, but the potency of his attraction is extremely difficult to deny and causes him to start searching for ways to aid Isabel instead of just apprehending her.
Action and emotion are interwoven to generate engaging romantic suspense all through TEMPTED BY HIS TARGET. One or both of these two diverse aspects are fully evident on every page of the story, as danger keeps the main couple on the run while their feelings become more confused with each passing minute. There is plenty of suspense to keep your attention, and many of the situations which arise are not foreseen at all, thus upping your apprehension of what may take place next. Several of the incidents Brandon and Isabel must contend with are very precarious, and I certainly found these scenes to be volatile with unpredictability. When the location of a book takes place in another country, I like being treated to customs of a particular area and Ms. Sorenson delivers by taking me on a vividly portrayed journey through Mexico. While the exploits Brandon and Isabel must endure way too often are intriguing, the countless emotional concerns which must be tackled are just as compelling. She has made some mistakes in her past and now wants to make a better life for herself, but there is no simple solution for her and Ms. Sorenson does not make her path easy. Although I did not always agree with the actions taken by Isabel, I could still understand the motives behind her reactions plus realize some responses are impulsive. Brandon had thought his life was going well with no real complications until he meets his latest target, and then his plans quickly go downhill. The pull these two feel for the other is powerful, and their expression of this longing is explosively fiery. TEMPTED BY HIS TARGET is an adventure of the heart and body, while danger ups the jeopardy to both.
