Review: The Heartbreak Sheriff by Elle Kennedy
January 5, 2012 in Harlequin Romantic Suspense, January 2012, Reviews by Amelia
Mysteries and romance equally share the spotlight in THE HEARTBREAK SHERIFF, as the unknowns are numerous and the love story is constantly affecting. Elle Kennedy superbly keeps the reader in the dark concerning the question of who did it and why in the final book of the Small-Town Scandals miniseries, while also taking her main couple on a journey of self-discovery.
When a local woman is murdered, no real evidence is found until two significant clues are discovered. The facts point toward Sarah Connelly, a single mom who also lives in Serenade, NC. Although the town’s sheriff, Patrick “Finn” Finnegan, does not believe the woman with whom he once had a close relationship could be the killer, he is forced to lock her in jail because of the material proof.
Finn wants Sarah to have faith in him, but he destroyed her devotion when their relationship ended four years ago. With her being the only suspect, he keeps diligently investigating in order to uncover the actual murderer. It is not easy for Sarah to believe Finn when he is adamant about helping her, as he let her down before when she needed him. However, this time he is not going to make her depend only on herself, and he will do whatever it takes to prove her innocence.
The suspense is clever and the romance is always heartfelt in the latest release by Elle Kennedy. The number of undisclosed mysteries continues to rise as the story progresses, and most revelations took me by surprise with their unexpectedness. Ms. Kennedy expertly keeps her clues subtle, as they are there but do not jump out with glaring clarity. I really like when divulged facts stun me, and THE HEARTBREAK SHERIFF is full of quite a few eye-openers. While these verifications do compel you to keep reading and learn additional information, the romantic details concerning the relationship between Finn and Sarah are just as gripping. Trust and forgiveness are two very big issues that must be worked out before this couple can ever get back together, and they have to face several extremely trying situations before any real happiness can enter into either of their lives. The choices each of them makes on a number of occasions are not only difficult but often heartrending, and their responses are frequently touching on a poignant level. There is much realism in their relationship, as their past is filled with painful memories and their reactions in the present relate accordingly. There are times when I wanted to cry right along with them as their anguish is so honestly sincere, and other scenes let me experience their inner desires as a touch turned into a lot more. The sex between Finn and Sarah is very emotive, as they express their feelings in a truthful manner and with loads of sensuality. Both books in the Small-Town Scandals miniseries are riveting, and neither should be missed. THE HEARTBREAK SHERIFF is suspenseful plus romantic, where every scene is dramatically enthralling.
