Two characters who believe love is not in their futures are the focus of KISSED BY A VAMPIRE, the latest book in The Calling series, and finding long-term contentment will not be easy for either of them. There are a multitude of predicaments in their lives which keep either the hero or heroine from committing themselves to another person, yet sometimes the potent power of intense devotion cannot be denied.
On an undercover assignment, DEA agent Alex Garcia would have surely died if not for a vampiress who unexpectedly saved him. He does not want to believe his nightmares are based on fact and that vampires are actually living amongst humans, so he constantly questions what truly happened on that fateful night. When he is almost ready to go back on active duty in the South Beach area of Florida, a woman at one of the clubs he has already started to watch seems especially familiar to him but he cannot remember any exact details.
When Stacia decided to keep Alex from dying, she never thought their paths would ever cross again. After coming to South Beach from New York City, she just wants to keep up her strength by grabbing several sips of blood from unsuspecting donors, plus enjoy some gratifying yet meaningless sex. Meeting back up with Alex makes Stacia yearn for something she knows can never be hers, but will settle for some hot sex with him. After he learns the truth about her when proof is vividly given, he knows walking away is what should be done so he can concentrate on his case relating to missing woman perhaps being sold as slaves. However, sometimes a kiss can make someone dream of future possibilities, and these hopes become equally important.
There are always a wide variety of realistic emotions in a book by Caridad Piñeiro. Sometimes humor is unmistakable in a playful response or there might only be profound desire evident during a scene, but each incident will definitely be believable because of how anyone is affected. The supernatural world created for the numerous vampires in The Calling series is original with distinctive traits and history for these undead individuals, and KISSED BY A VAMPIRE features a vampiress who is very old plus powerful. Stacia has only been concerned about her own needs for many centuries, but a second encounter with Alex makes her begin to long for love in her life and she actually starts to consider the wants of someone else. These two are immediately drawn to the other because of their previous ties, but this physical pull cannot turn into a lasting relationship if they keep their feelings from being involved as they constantly think should be done. This tug of war between desire and beliefs causes quite a few moments where feelings are confused and daily life is even hindered by these unwanted sentiments. The reactions of Alex and Stacia are certainly convincing, as their uncertainties are obvious when they let their minds rule the situation and not their hearts. Any sex between this couple is filled with understanding about the other, particularly from Alex, and this leads to unselfish consideration during the act that is fueled by heat on an explosive level. There is a mystery to be unraveled in the story, and some of the resulting threats are lethally dangerous and cause the heart to pound. The Calling series is one of the most creative paranormal series ever written, and I want many more books in the future. KISSED BY A VAMPIRE is emotionally sensual with surprising feelings of lusty desire.
