Review: Manhunter by Loreth Anne White
The vastness, beauty and potential dominance of the distinctive environment in the first book of the Wild Country miniseries comes alive with vivid details, and the people of this region are portrayed as steadfast and loyal. Loreth Anne White has created a spectacular story of revenge, loss and hope using her personal knowledge of the locality.
Haunted by emotional turmoil, Sergeant Gabriel Caruso has taken a post in an exceedingly isolated area located in the Northern Yukon. The Royal Canadian Mountie lost much on a fateful day when a serial killer took the life of several fellow officers, one of whom was the woman he planned to marry. Gabe feels responsible for their deaths and the guilt has him accepting the new position where he wants to forget this part of his life. Upon arrival in Black Arrow Falls, he meets Silver Karvonen, the first person to arouse his interest since the killings. Though she is friendly enough, he senses she is holding something back but then so is he.
Unfortunately, Gabe will not be able to evade his past for long, because the man to blame for turning his life upside down has escaped from prison and is now threatening him plus anyone in the vicinity. Although Silver is the best tracker around, he does not want her helping him to find this ruthless killer as he fears for her safety. However, she is one determined woman and they soon end up working together to keep this psychopath from harming anyone else. As Gabe and Silver battle against man and nature, their lives become entangled in unforeseen ways as emotions conflict and passions reawaken.
Stories by Loreth Anne White fulfill the demands of romantic suspense lovers, as they bring you plots packed with intrigue yet also overflowing with profound emotions. The Wild Country miniseries starts off with a creative premise and the unique setting only adds more enthrallment. Readers will become thoroughly captivated by every instant of this story, as each scene totally engages one’s full attention and the real world fades away. My own heart became fully involved in the lives of Gabe and Silver from the moment of their introduction, as their personalities drew me into not only what was currently happening to them but what had transpired previously. As more information comes to light about this couple, their anguish and shattered dreams touched me deeply. Ms. White lets her characters express their heartfelt feelings in such a realistic way, as their sincerity clearly comes through. Whether it was a poignant conversation or a compassionate action, the often hidden yet ingrained principles of Gabe and Silver are never far from the surface. Gabe is such a noteworthy hero, though seemingly lost when it comes to emotion, and his true nature is superbly conveyed through words, thoughts and responses. When these two cannot hold back the passions heating up between them, the moment is blazingly fiery yet also filled with earnestness. The suspenseful aspects of the story are described in unnerving detail, as the reader soon comes to realize how much danger has arrived in the Yukon. My desire to learn what happens next kept me reading every word with anxious anticipation. MANHUNTER is dangerously suspenseful plus emotionally affecting, and the unforgettable characters will long be remembered.
