The peaceful life she lives in mountainous Haven, West Virginia is interrupted when Keely Schiffer discovers a skull when she is digging in her flower bed. She had hoped her life had finally returned to normal after her womanizing husband was killed in an accident. Now Keely knows the police will be coming to her home again after her gruesome discovery. Unfortunately, a brewing thunderstorm keeps her from calling the police, but it does manage to break a jar, where she finds an unanticipated present from her late husband.
Her day does not get any better, as an annoyed client arrives at her house after Keely forget to leave a key to his rental home as promised. The man, Jake Malloy, has come to Haven to straighten out his life while on leave from the Charleston police department, after a case changed his career and life. However, when their lives abruptly turn chaotic during a surprising earthquake and Jack and Keely must rely on each other when they become trapped in her cellar, this couple comes to realize their lives are not as orderly as they believe. As the sparks, which developed as soon as they saw each other, are allowed to flame, their lives are changed forever, especially since fate seems to want them to keep meeting.
While these two get to know each other more personally after they are rescued, they soon discover they are more alike than first thought, and the strange occurrences surrounding their lives only bring them closer. When potentially deadly threats take place along with several unnatural incidences, Jake and Keely find themselves facing an uncertain future in the previously quiet town of Haven.
With her vivid imagination, Suzanne McMinn is able to make the unbelievable seem factual, even when a paranormal element is present. Ms. McMinn is particularly talented when it comes to depicting the picturesque setting of this story, where each item described becomes extraordinarily real in the mind of the reader. Her colorful way with words also causes her engaging characters to be very lifelike, as their natures are composed of convincing feelings in every situation. Jake and Keely are a charming couple, both stressed out from events in their pasts yet trying to act as if everything is right in their world. When turmoil once again enters their lives, they turn to each other, causing the couple to lose control of their emotions, especially when the attraction they felt from the beginning blazes out of control. Jack and Keely are certainly spirited individuals, whose personalities deeply appealed to me, making me care about them and what destiny had in store for their future. The supernatural incidents which Haven is recently experiencing are cleverly handled by Ms. McMinn, where frequently their reasons for being are undetermined. Learning the consequences of these episodes makes me very anxious to see what will transpire in the next book of this series. SECRETS RISING is a spellbinding story, where mysteries and the unknown are secretively lurking.
