Review: Fury Calls by Caridad Pineiro
Readers rejoice! The Calling series is back with more dynamic characters and a particularly chilling storyline, where passions and hopes are profoundly heartfelt. Caridad Pineiro has struck gold one again, as this incomparable story is a winner on every level.
While Meghan Thomas was a college senior in New York City, she wanted to experience something excitingly different before going back home. Unfortunately, she got more than she bargained for when Blake Richards turned her into a vampire to keep her from dying after he took too much blood from her. Though Meghan has learned to live with being a vampire, she cannot forgive the man who changed her life forever. Blake has never forgotten the woman who touched him as no other before her, and his regret over what happened has him wanting to change his life for the better. Vowing to prove her opinion of him is incorrect, he gets work at the exclusive restaurant where she is the chef in the hope she will see him in a different light.
Meghan does not want to rely on her sire for anything, and believes she will continuously feel resentment towards the man who irrevocably changed her future forever. However, as these two spend time together at work, she starts to see a side of Blake which she never knew existed. He thought any emotions he once had are long buried, but being near Meghan has these human feelings resurfacing and makes him desire more from her. When a series of baffling deaths occur to several vampires when they are at the restaurant, Blake and Meghan become involved in discovering what is causing these mysterious circumstances. Just when he feels his plan to prove his worth may actually succeed, a sinister being puts his evil plan in motion, and this couple must set aside doubts or all vampires in the area will be in dire danger.
Caridad Pineiro creates believable characters and emotively riveting plots. Any supernatural elements are presented in a convincing manner, where the extraordinary seems totally conceivable. From the unnerving prologue to the enthralling conclusion and every spellbinding moment in-between, this story is compellingly fascinating. Situations are frequently unforeseen and their outcome is never certain until every word is spoken and each deed is carried out. Ms. Pineiro is a master when it comes to the unexpected, and FURY CALLS is a prime example of her gifted talent. Readers will repeatedly find themselves holding their breath during the many dangerously suspenseful dilemmas confronting the heroic characters. Blake and Meghan are extremely likable individuals, and I found myself completely caught up in what was happening to them and also what the future held. With the tragic history between these two, there was not an easy solution for them to even become friends, much less form any type of real relationship. Ms. Pineiro creates countless intriguing adventures to challenge this couple, and each one is packed with engrossing scenarios to keep the reader guessing as to their final conclusion. Blake and Meghan are both portrayed with a sincerity which gives insight into their true inner natures, showing how these two vampires have still retained some human emotions often absent after they are turned. Though they are definitely passionately enthusiastic when it comes to being intimate with each other, honest caring and even tenderness is conveyed by them, not just having sex for the sake of fulfilling one’s own needs. Blake specially touched me with his displays of honest feelings, and my own heart ached for him when his anguish turned physical. The merciless villain in the story is one of most despicable I have ever read, and his ruthless acts will have you wanting him to be made accountable for these actions. There are past characters whose lives are revisited, and it was especially delightful discovering what is currently happening to Ryder and Diana. FURY CALLS is poignantly moving plus frighteningly gripping, and will stay with you long after the last word is read.
