Guardian’s Keep by Lori Devoti
The mystical world created by Lori Devoti for the first book in her Unbound series only becomes more intriguing in the second story, as supernatural beings with magical abilities abound. Suspenseful from beginning to end, the heart-pounding scenes are skillfully intertwined with the numerous poignant moments, making this story perfectly balanced all the way through.
As the guardian to a portal which can take someone to another realm, Kol Hildr takes his position very seriously. Since he is a shape-shifter known as a garm who can turn into a wolf, his supernatural abilities aid in controlling who goes through the portal and who is denied access. One woman who went to another world is Kelly Shane, a witch with powerful magical skills. She was trying to help a friend, who regrettably never returned to this world alive, and Kelly almost did not make it back either. She feels Kol is to some extent responsible for what occurred to her friend, and she is determined to have justice for this wrong. With a plan in mind, Kelly watches and waits for the opportunity to hopefully keep the man who guards the portal housed in the Guardian’s Keep bar from ever harming an innocent again.
On one of the nights when Kelly visits the bar, Kol is challenged by others and a fight breaks out. When these attacks continue, he wonders if the witch is somehow involved. Making matters worse is the realization he is very attracted to Kelly, and he senses she returns his feelings though she would never admit it to him. With Kol wanting to protect her while keeping any danger away from his portal, too, he is constantly torn between which path to follow. When Kelly is threatened by others, Kol must decide what risks he is truly willing to take for her.
Once again, the talent of Lori Devoti shines on each page as her imagination takes readers to a world where the extraordinary seems entirely real. There was not one instant in the story where I did not believe every aspect of what was happening, from the fascinating features of the portal to the creative abilities depicted by those with supernatural powers. The action in the story is often perilous with unknown factors, which will cause readers to hold their breath until the outcome is finally disclosed. These scenes are packed with ingeniously inventive details, making each moment vividly come to life. With countless emotional issues between Kol and Kelly combined with the secretive plots surrounding them both, their lives are extremely complicated. Though neither wanted the potent desire felt between them to continue to build, fate has other ideas as their lives continuously cross. This couple is endearingly genuine in personality, especially Kol as his always hidden compassionate nature surfaces when something concerns Kelly. When they let their actions be controlled by their hearts and not their minds, the intensely intimate feelings expressed by Kol and Kelly are fervent yet heartfelt. The conclusion of the book is definitely satisfying, and will have one looking forward to the next engrossing book in this series. GUARDIAN’S KEEP is an incomparable paranormal story overflowing with powerful emotions, steamy passions and never-ending action.
