All the qualities that make the Harlequin Romantic Suspense line compelling are packed into the first book by Jean Thomas. There is nonstop peril throughout the book plus numerous issues caused by emotional turmoil, resulting in a constantly riveting story.
When the man whom the FBI was counting on to give them vital knowledge about a mob boss is mysteriously killed in Canada, the organization knows they need to talk with the woman who was with him. Though her relationship to the man is not known, they still want her brought back to Chicago for questioning and agent Sam McDonough is sent to retrieve her. When the two meet, his abrupt and unfriendly manners rub her wrong but she leaves with him anyway.
The only thing Sam wants is for this assignment to be over swiftly. Unfortunately, his wish will not be happening as their small plane is shot down and their lives turn into one nightmare after another. Eve quickly discovers that Sam is transformed after the mishap, as a hit to his head causes him to lose his memory. It also dramatically changes his personality, as his snippy attitude is now much more compassionate and pleasant. As they work together to keep the cold Canadian weather and the relentless criminals from killing them, Sam and Eve also battle the longing they feel for each other as it increasingly mounts.
Jean Thomas creates nonstop action from beginning to end in a romantic suspense novel. Whether an exploit is comprised of physical danger caused by the environment or a criminal with malevolent intent, these threats are always imminently looming in AWOL WITH THE OPERATIVE. There are quite a few times when triumph over a precarious situation seemed dire, as I saw no way for Sam and Eve to prevail over the seemingly hopeless circumstances. The freezing weather would have been bad enough by itself, but when the dilemma of those pursuing them is added, then the predicament is doubly worrisome for these two. While neither of them is prepared for what they have to face, I was especially surprised by how Eve responded during a number of incidents, proving her ability to be a quick thinker. Sam is a very complicated character, as his behavior is not the best before the plane crash but does a complete turnaround afterward. I liked how Eve could interpret his two dissimilar moods and the way she held her ground if warranted. Sam struggles with how he will interact with her during many instances, and I love seeing the mind and heart of the hero being so conflicted. The scenes where this couple lets their desire control the moment is expressed with plenty of passion and fiery heat, while the inner emotions they feel are conveyed through unspoken thoughts. Jean Thomas has written a very engrossing book for the romantic suspense line, and I look forward to many more titles from this talented author. AWOL WITH THE OPERATIVE is enthralling with dangerous intrigue, unforeseen turns and passionate desire.
