Review: Seduction Under Fire by Melissa Cutler Book Give Away

A kick-butt heroine and a tempting hero make the debut Harlequin Romantic Suspense novel by Melissa Cutler engaging, plus the storyline is totally intriguing at all times. Ms. Cutler looks to have a bright future ahead, as I was completely caught up in every moment of this gripping story featuring a very likable couple.

Her dream career of being a cop was going very well for Camille Fisher until she was shot, and she has been working as a dispatcher ever since. Although it is not as fulfilling, she still gives it her all and has no real social life. There is one person, Aaron Montgomery, whom she does not want in her life because she does not approve of his behavior, and she tries to avoid him if at all possible. However, when the two are abducted by dangerous men who belong to a Mexican cartel, there looks to be no way she can evade talking to him if they want any chance of escaping.

While a cunning idea by Camille actually sets them free, they are still not safe as both fears those who captured them will follow as the couple tries to hide in the desert. As they make plans to keep from being found, they come to realize neither really knows the other, and these revelations add fuel to the attraction that is slowly growing between them. Yet with the cartel not easily giving up the chase, Camille and Aaron try to keep their minds on staying alive and not how much they desire the other.

The fascinating premise of SEDUCTION UNDER FIRE is brilliantly executed by Melissa Cutler. From scenes of personal vulnerability to life-threatening jeopardy to earnest desires, this story depicts genuine reactions with particularly real feelings. The emotions that Camille and Aaron go through run the gamut from anger to fear to longing, and each one is expressed with such honesty and often straightforward candidness. While these two started out feeling as though they were adversaries, as they seemed to have very differing views about many subjects, they gradually begin to realize there are some redeeming qualities they never knew about the other. This insight causes them to question some of their beliefs about their own lives. Even though they may come to see each other in a different light, there are still plenty of quick-witted comebacks to be said, and those caused more by lust than loathing are just as delightfully amusing. Camille and Aaron are very intelligent characters, and they each prove their cleverness time and again, especially when it concerns her talent for quick thinking under pressure. I was repeatedly amazed by how crafty they were in dealing with the cartel, and I felt like applauding their triumphs on more than one occasion. While this couple may have been able to prevail over their enemies at times, the threats from this group could crop up at any moment and often did without any notice, thus keeping me in a state of constant trepidation. Camille and Aaron believe they are complete opposites when it comes to how they think about sex, yet this does not keep the enthusiasm out of their lovemaking, as their fervent eagerness for each other is very apparent. Ms. Cutler makes any romantic feelings between them seem so sincere, as what they are feeling at that moment is very clearly portrayed. Also, all details pertaining to a location are colorfully described and let the reader experience them to the fullest, regardless of where a scene is taking place. Melissa Cutler has another book coming out next year, and I want it now! SEDUCTION UNDER FIRE is romantic suspense at its best, as danger is ever present and emotions are relentlessly conflicted.

Celebrating Sixty Wonderful Books with Liz Fielding

Award-winning author Liz Fielding chats to CataRomance about writing sixty fabulous romances for Harlequin Romance – and about her brand new novel, Flirting with Italian

It seems no time at all since I was celebrating the publication of my fiftieth book, but FLIRTING WITH ITALIAN is, amazingly, my sixtieth story for Harlequin Mills and Boon. It was published this December on the nineteenth anniversary of the publication of my first book.

Another project I’ve been working on this year has involved me looking back at those early books and wondering at the changes that have taken place in all our lives during that time.

Communication — the writers’ business — has been at the heart of it.

Mobile phones (I tried to imagine what my mother would have made of me standing in the supermarket and calling my daughter on the train to ask what kind of breakfast cereal she wanted). The internet, websites and blogs, email rather than letters, texting, Skype. They were science fiction for my generation, for whom Star Trek was a glimpse of the distant future.

My first attempts at fiction were created on a portable typewriter (an early attempt at the netbook!) on the dining room table. My first published book was printed out painfully slowly on a printer that cost ten times more than the one I use now – and it was monochrome of course – from a computer with the memory of a goldfish and despatched via snail mail.

Contact with other authors was by a photocopied newsletter. Setting up a website was a major project and took months. The whisper of a new thing called a blog set the heart beating faster.

Looking back, it sounds like the dark ages but it feels like yesterday.

Sarah Gratton, the heroine in my latest book, FLIRTING WITH ITALIAN, has a blog, uses text, new technology which offers new and wonderful ways to add layers to the intensity of her story, but the romance is still as old as Rome where she goes to find a new life.

I have a copy of Flirting with Italian to give away. Tell me how new technology has changed your life, or connected you in some way with the man of your dreams (or nightmares!) I’ll pick a winner a week from now.

Un milione di baci!
