Review: Captain Corcoran’s Hoyden Bride – Annie Burrows

2:58 pm in April 2012, Harlequin Historical, Reviews, USA by juliemt

Scandal has always pursued Miss Aimee Peters. Before she was born, her mother had defied her father’s wishes to make a suitable match and had married a disreputable gambler and thief. Thus, Aimee’s childhood had been one long whirl of moonlit flits, shady characters and unexpected journeys all across the Continent. The one thing Aimee has always craved was respectability, but after the sudden death of her beloved mother, Aimee’s dream had drifted further and further away from her grasp. Her father’s drinking and gambling has got out of control and the Peters have now no money or possessions. Having reached the end of her tether, Aimee doesn’t know what she is going to do to save herself and her father from destitution and penury. But not even Aimee was aware of just how low her father was prepared to sink…

Much to Aimee’s disgust, her wastrel of a father had been so blinded by his addiction to the gaming tables that he had gambled away his daughter’s virginity! Shocked, betrayed and humiliated, Aimee is absolutely incredulous! How could her father stoop so low and do such a thing? Although Aimee has stood by him and been there for him through this incredibly difficult time, she will not allow herself to be subjugated like this. Aimee needs to escape from her father’s house and when she comes across an advertisement looking for a governess in Yorkshire, Aimee decides to pack what few belongings she has and to leave London and her father behind.

Having mostly dealt with her employer’s man of business, Aimee is stunned when she claps eyes on Captain Corcoran for the very first time. Her piratical new employer is saturnine, enigmatic, dangerous yet magnetic. Aimee cannot help but find herself drawn to the inscrutable former navy officer. However, little does she realize that Captain Corcoran has a secret…

Captain Corcoran doesn’t have any children, so he certainly does not need to hire a governess. Having just inherited a title and all the responsibilities which go hand in hand with being a member of polite society, what Captain Corcoran requires is a wife…

Aimee is shocked by this outrageous proposition. Although her first instinct is to run away, she knows that as Captain Corcoran’s bride, she would be safe and protected. Yet, little does Aimee realize that her marriage to Captain Corcoran will be anything but convenient!

Skillfully intertwining wicked wit and delicious humour with heartwarming pathos and nail-biting drama, Captain Corcoran’s Hoyden Bride is a terrific Regency tale fans of historical romance are sure to love. Funny, tender, suspenseful and wonderfully romantic, it’s impossible not to love feisty Aimee, the charismatic Captain Corcoran and the eccentric cast of supporting characters that people this first-class Regency romance!

Spellbinding historical romances laced with intrigue and desire is what Annie Burrows does best and Captain Corcoran’s Hoyden Bride is the latest in a long line of enthralling Regencies from this outstanding writer!

Review: The Taming of the Rogue by Amanda McCAbe

2:44 pm in Harlequin Historical, May 2012, Reviews by Debby

cover

After a disastrous marriage, Anna Barrett is happy mending costumes and serving beer at the White Heron Theater. She refuses to be taken in by the actors and keeps herself free of any involvements. That worked well until Robert Alden. A playwright and actor, Robert has a string of women who follow after him but he never gives his heart. Dashing and courageous, Robert is also a spy on a dangerous mission. Anna is drawn into his assignment and realizes that scheming is the least of her problems. She must protect her heart and her life if she cannot tame this rogue.

Rich in history and filled with delightful romance, The Taming of the Rogue was a fun book to read. Both Robert and Anna had scars from their pasts and both hide in their own ways – Anna in the theater with her grey dresses and Robert in his plays with his playful attitude. Each could see beyond the disguise and into the heart and soul of the other. The Taming of the Rogue also takes us down a path in history that is not often trod. The plot is engaging and the setting is refreshing while the hero and heroine are perfect. Amanda McCabe has again graced us with a compelling story that will touch our hearts and senses.

Doctor Paige Brennan is an obstetrician at Safe Harbor Medical.  She has delivered many infants but now she wants a baby of her own.  With no man in her life, the only logical resource is a sperm donor.  Whether it be hormones or physical attraction, Paige soon finds herself not only pregnant but lusting after her roommate, the irritatingly handsome private detective, Mike Aaron.

Mike has had his eye on the tall, alluring red-head, Paige Brennan, for quite a while.  He can not believe his luck when he finesses his way as her roommate and hopefully her lover.  But just as the two begin to trust each other, Paige discovers Mike’s secret which puts a monkey wrench in their casual affair.

Dynamic lead characters, up-to-date plot line and familiar setting engage readers instantly in multifaceted Jacqueline Diamond’s THE BABY DILEMMA.  All the Safe Harbor Medical series books are stand alone reads but why deny yourself the treat by missing a single book.  THE BABY DILEMMA is a story about a modern woman, like many today, that has not met the right man but still wants a family.  Dr. Paige Brennan takes matters into her own hands by using a sperm donor.  Things get exciting when Paige and Mike connect romantically, only to find out later that Mike is Paige’s sperm donor.  What a conundrum, one that readers will thoroughly enjoy.

Review: Brought Together By Baby – Margaret McDonagh

11:55 am in M&B Medical, March 2012, Reviews, UK by juliemt

Dr. Gus Buchanan has always been a loner. Having realized from a very early age that he couldn’t rely on anybody but himself, Gus had built impenetrable defenses around his heart and vowed to give relationships and emotions a very wide berth. But all his resolutions had crumbled when he moved to the charming Scottish town of Strathlochan and meet kind-hearted nurse Holly Tait. Holly had been the only person who had managed to breach the shutters which he had built around himself and, for the very first time in his entire life, Gus finally felt like he had found the one person who would love him unconditionally. Everything seemed to be going splendidly for Gus and Holly, but little did they realize that a jealous adversary had been hiding in the wings, intent on tearing them apart…

Holly had been unable to stop herself from falling for Gus. The caring nurse was over the moon when Gus had asked her out on a date, but she had been crushed when Gus had stood her up and opted to spend the night with her glamorous older sister. Determined to keep things as professional as possible between her and Gus, Holly had asked for a transfer at the hospital they both worked and vowed to keep out of the way of her sister and the man whom she loved with all her heart. However, out of sight does not necessarily mean out of mind…

Gus cannot believe that he had cheated on Holly with her sister. Not only is Julia not the sort of woman whom he usually finds attractive, but he’s got no recollection of spending the night with her. But how can he possibly turn his back on Julia, especially now that she’s announced that she’s carrying his child? Gus is determined to do the right thing by Julia and their child – but that doesn’t stop him from loving Holly or from wishing that things had worked out between the two of them.

When a tragic accident leaves him solely in charge of his motherless son, Gus finds himself turning to Holly for help. Still grieving the loss of her sister, Holly vows to keep her heart under lock and key and not let her feelings for Gus compromise the well-being of her nephew. But when long-buried emotions and hidden passions resurface, will Gus and Holly continue to let wounded pride and debilitating fears jeopardize their happiness? Or will they finally find the courage to admit the truth about their feelings for one another?

Margaret McDonagh has outdone herself once again with Brought Together by Baby! A captivating page-turner written with plenty of warmth, compassion and confidence, this tender, heart-wrenching but ultimately uplifting tale of old wounds, second chances and everlasting love has a fantastic heroine you’ll simply adore and a gorgeous and brooding hero you cannot help but fall madly in love with.

In her illustrious career with Harlequin Mills and Boon, Margaret McDonagh broke boundaries, pushed the envelope and consistently crafted first-class romantic novels that entranced and delighted readers the world over. Supremely talented, brave and simply wonderful, Margaret McDonagh will be missed, but she will never be forgotten.
